Boy injured in mowing accident to host fundraiser

METAMORA — Archer Granger, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ 2011 Michigan State Champion, will be hosting a fundraiser to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) and Hurley Children’s Hospital.

The event is Feb. 24 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Metamora BP in Metamora (on M24 North of Dryden Road). For a minimum $1 donation, there is a choice of a hot cup of coffee or cocoa and a delicious baked good. There will also be CMNH rubber bracelets for $1, and a “Miracle Maker” instant prize drawing.

Proceeds from this fundraiser go straight to CMNH at Hurley, so all the money we make here, stays here, helping kids in our community! This event is being held in conjunction with the 102.5 WIOG “Cares for Kids” Radiothon, which will air on Feb. 23-24, and also benefits CMNH at Hurley.

In August, 2009, Archer Granger was run over by an industrial zero-turn lawnmower. He was airlifted to Hurley Medical Center, where he was treated for serious, life-threatening injuries to his legs and feet. His right foot was 95 percent severed, and his legs were shattered. It took 19 surgeons, nearly 40 attendants, and 4 surgeries to reattach his foot and save his life. Archer spent only 19 days in Hurley’s PICU, and three months in a wheelchair. Today, Archer is a happy, healthy 7-yearold that runs and jumps like any other boy ... on his own two feet. — G.G.

FLINT — The Kidney Cancer Educational Support Group will meet March 13 from 1:30- 3:30 p.m. at Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, 302 Kensington Ave. Featured speaker: Dr. Susumu Inoue, Pediatric-Oncology Specialist, Hurley Medical Center.

The topic: “Difference in the Outcome for Adolescents and Young Adults with Leukemia and Cancer Treated by Pediatric vs. Medical Oncologists.” Meeting is open to the general public. Genesys offers free infant safety class

GENESEE COUNTY — The Genesys Family Birthing Center staff wants to make sure first time parents are as prepared as possible for the birth of their new baby.

“When parents return home with their newborn, often they realize they have many unanswered questions and concerns,” said Jill Croteau, RN, childbirth educator at Genesys.

That is why Genesys offers “Safety and Prevention,” for expectant parents and new parents.

The free, two-hour class covers many topics of concern for new parents: Upcoming classes are: Feb. 27 and March 27 from 6-8 p.m., in Room 3434 of Genesys Regional Medical Center’s Health Park campus, located in Grand Blanc Township.
